Hebrew University Amitsur Algebra Seminar ---------------------------------- Time: Thursday, March 21, 12:00-13:15 Place: math 209 Title: Longer nilpotent series Speaker: James B. Wilson (Colorado State University, USA) Abstract: We introduce new characteristic nilpotent series for groups by refining the usual series of Fitting-Hall, Higman, Jennings, Lazard and others. These refinements can increase the length of the series by an arbitrary amount; so, they constrain the possible automorphisms of a group considerably and make many low class groups resemble groups of much larger class. Also, these longer series maintain a correspondence with graded Lie rings. The refinements rely on Jordan and Lie algebras, commutative and non-commutative rings, and *-rings, but despite their unusual origins, each refinement can be computed by solving systems of linear equations and so they are practical tools. The talk will assume only modest background for groups and rings and include examples and open questions.
