Title: Longer nilpotent series

Abstract: We introduce new characteristic nilpotent series for
groups by refining the usual series of Fitting-Hall, Higman,
Jennings, Lazard and others. These refinements can increase
the length of the series by an arbitrary amount; so, they
constrain the possible automorphisms of a group considerably
and make many low class groups resemble groups of much larger
class. Also, these longer series maintain a correspondence
with graded Lie rings. The refinements rely on Jordan and Lie
algebras, commutative and non-commutative rings, and *-rings,
but despite their unusual origins, each refinement can be
computed by solving systems of linear equations and so they
are practical tools. The talk will assume only modest
