Tel Aviv University Applied Mathematics Seminar Date: Tuesday November 13, 2012, 15:10 Place: Schreiber Bldg, Room 309 Speaker: Hillel Tal-Ezer, Academic College of Tel-Aviv Yaffo Title: Non-periodic trigonometric approximation Abstract: The suitable basis functions for approximating periodic function are periodic, trigonometric functions. When the function is not periodic, a viable alternative is to consider polynomials as basis functions. In this talk we will point out the inadequacy of polynomial approximation and suggest a new set of basis functions. The new set does not suffer from the drawbacks of polynomial approximation and the error which results goes to zero exponentially fast.
