Title: an approximation principle for congruence subgroups
A well-known theorem of Nori (which was later on generalized by
Larsen-Pink) asserts that, roughly speaking, the subgroups of
GL_n(F_p) are ``not far'' from algebraic.
I will tell about a result of the same spirit, but much cruder, for
congruence subgroups of G(Z_p) where G is a reductive group over the
p-adic integers.
Some applications will be discussed as well.
This is joint work with Tobias Finis.
You are cordially invited!
