Abstract: The Mallows measure on Sn may be viewed as a Gibbs measure
for a mean-field Hamiltonian counting the number of inversions: i<j
such that pi_i > pi_j. Taking this approach and using mean-field
theory of classical spin systems, we have been able to determine a
number of limiting results, if one uses the true mean-field scaling
for the exponential weight parameter beta. This talk will describe
joint work with Carl Mueller and Meg Walters, where we give a law of
large numbers for the length of the longest increasing subsequence, a
large deviation principle for the empirical measure and some rough
bounds on the fluctuations of the longest increasing subsequence using
concentration of measure.
