Abstract: The recent introduction by Smirnov of the so-called
parafermionic observable led to important progress towards the
understanding of two-dimensional models of statistical mechanics,
most notably the proof of conformal invariance of the critical Ising
model in the square lattice (and in isoradial graphs). The aim of the
minicourse is to provide a self-contained report on that proof and
related topics.
