Tel Aviv University Hello everyone, The next colloquium talk will be held on Monday, 23/4/2012, 12:15, Schreiber 006, Tel Aviv University. The speaker is Oleg Lepski (University of Provence, France) and the title of his talk is Upper functions for a collection of random variables and adaptive estimation The abstract is given below. Tea and coffee at 12:00, same room. Hope to see you there. For information about future colloqiua, see <http://www.math.tau.ac.il/~klartagb/colloq_2011.html> You are all welcome to suggest colloquium speakers for this semester. Yours, Bo'az -------------- Abstract: The main objective of the talk is to look from a unique point of view at some phenomena arising in different areas of probability theory and mathematical statistics. In particular, we will try to understand what is common between classical probabilistic results, such as the law of iterated logarithm for example, and a well-known problem in adaptive estimation called price to pay for adaptation. Why do there exist two different kinds of this price? It turned out that all of these and many others problems can be reduced to finding upper functions for a collection of positives random variables. --------------------------------------------------------- Technion Math Net-2 (TECHMATH2) Editor: Michael Cwikel <techm@math.technion.ac.il> Announcement from: <klartagb@post.tau.ac.il>
