Title: The space of vector bundles on curves and surfaces

Abstract: Given an algebraic variety X, we can ask what the "space" of vector
bundles on X looks like. What are its geometric and topological
properties? How can it deform? How do these properties reflect
similar properties of the original variety X? Also, why did I write
the word space in quotation marks? Much is known when X is one
dimensional (so the complex points are a Riemann surface) and I will
summarize some of the history here. The case of two dimensions is
already filled with mystery. I will discuss some work motivated
towards understanding the two dimensional case.
