BEN GURION UNIVERSITY OF THE NEGEV DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS ================================== Operator and System Theory Seminar ================================== SPEAKER: Ilan Hirshberg, BGU TITLE: Nuclear dimension - a brief survey DATE: Monday, November 21, 2011 PLACE: Room -101, Mathematics Building, BGU TIME: 14:10 ABSTRACT: The study of structure and classification of nuclear C*-algebras has been one of the main branches of operator algebras in the past four decades. The concept of decomposition rank and closely related concept of nuclear dimension were introduced by Kirchberg-Winter and Winter-Zacharias in the previous decade, as generalizations of covering dimension of topological spaces, and have generated considerable progress in the area. I will give a brief survey of those concepts, aimed at nonspecialists. I will assume that the audience knows what's a C*-algebra, but will not assume that it knows what's a nuclear C*-algebra.
