TITLE:   Finiteness of the Morse index for Schrodinger operators.

ABSTRACT: Let H be a Schr\"odinger operator. We are interested
in finding conditions under which H has a finite negative
spectrum.
We will prove that this is the case if and only if there is a
positive solution $\phi$ of $H\phi=0$ outside a compact set.
