                        and rank-driven Markov processes
In 1993 P. Bak and K. Sneppen introduced a very simple toy model of evolution
which has proved influential in many areas. It is easy to simulate and hard to
analyse. We show that many properties of this and similar models can be
obtained by considering Markov processes on countable spaces, which we call
rank-driven processes (RDPs) and for which we provide a rather complete
theory. But the question why the Bak-Sneppen model is so well described by a
much simpler RDP remains.
