The Weizmann Institute of Science Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science Mathematical Analysis and Applications Seminar Lecture Hall, Room 1, Ziskind Building on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 11:00 - noon Michael Grinfeld University of Strathclyde will speak on Bak-Sneppen type models and rank-driven Markov processes Abstract: In 1993 P. Bak and K. Sneppen introduced a very simple toy model of evolution which has proved influential in many areas. It is easy to simulate and hard to analyse. We show that many properties of this and similar models can be obtained by considering Markov processes on countable spaces, which we call rank-driven processes (RDPs) and for which we provide a rather complete theory. But the question why the Bak-Sneppen model is so well described by a much simpler RDP remains. This is joint work with Phil Knight and Andrew Wade.
