             Abstract
 
   The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy is a particular remarkable system of
PDEs. It turns out that generating functions of a number of enumerative
problems in complex geometry are solutions to these equations. This includes,
in particular, the Hurwitz potential that governs the enumeration of ramified
coverings of the sphere, the Witten-Kontsevich potential responsible
for the intersection theory on moduli spaces, and also the generating
series for residual polynomials appearing in the enumeration of
multisingularities of holomorphic mappings.
 
   The goal of the talk is to review the geometric viewpoint to the
theory of KP hierarchy and to explain the reason of its appearance in
the above mentioned enumerative problems.
