Title: A homotopy view of normal subgroups.
Homotopy theory defines for each group homomorphism
G--->H the Borel quotient, H//G, a certain canonical topological
orbit space quotient used in Borel's equivarient cohomology.
This raises the question of possible
topological group structures on this Borel quotient H//G, which leads to
a homotopy notion of normal subgroups N--->G.
Certain well-known canonical central extensions E--->G are always normal
in this sense. We shall try to classify them and discuss appliations
of this extension of normalty. (Join work with Y. Segev.)
