Title: p-Fusion in finite group theory from a homotopy theoretic viewpoint.
Abstract: This talk is an introduction to the theory of "p-local
groups". These are algebraic objects modelled on the conjugacy
relations among p-subgroups of a finite group. The idea is to isolate
those algebraic properties of the given finite group which
characterize certain topological constructions associated with it (to
be specific, the p-completion of its classifying space). While any
finite group admits a unique associated p-local finite group, one can
also work in greater generality in the sense that p-local finite
groups do not necessarily arise from finite groups, but still share a
number of very pleasant properties with the ones that do. In the talk
we will describe the basics of p-local finite group theory, and
mention some of the main results of the project.
