Technion - Israel Institute of Technology Department of Mathematics ============================================ PDE AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS SEMINAR ============================================ DATE: Tuesday, December 28, 2010 SPEAKER: Jean-Pierre Eckmann (University of Geneva) TITLE: C\'edric Villani's work on the Boltzmann equation PLACE: Room 814, Amado Mathematics Building, Technion TIME: 14:30 Abstract: The proof of convergence of solutions of the Boltzmann equation is one (of three) results for which Villani has been cited when he got the Fields medal. I will try to sketch the main ideas of his proof (mostly done together with Desvillettes). They are based on beautiful insight of how the absence of dissipation on Maxwellians can be overcome by a clever use of hypoelliptic and hypocoercive methods.
