TECHNION DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS ALGEBRA SEMINAR SPEAKER: Dima Gourevitch and Rami Aizenbud, Weizmann Institute TOPIC: Gelfand pairs and invariant distributions DATE: Thursday, August 14, 2008 TIME: 12:30--14:30 PLACE: AMADO 919 ABSTRACT: In the first part of the lecture we will introduce the notion of Gelfand pair and its connection to invariant distributions. Then we will list some recent results on Gelfand pairs and invariant distributions and discuss the tools used to achieve those results. In the second part of the lecture we will give a sketch of the proof that the pair (GL(n+1,F),GL(n,F)) is a strong Gelfand pair for any non-archimedean field F of characteristic 0. If we will have time, we will also say some words about the proof that (O(V+F), O(V)) is a strong Gelfand pair. This is a joint work with S. Rallis and G. Schiffmann. --------------------------------------------------------- Technion Math. Net (TECHMATH) Editor: Arie Leizarowitz Announcement from: Shlomo Gelaki
