Department of Mathematics University of Haifa Mathematics Club Speaker: Dr. Anna Melnikov Weizmann Institute of Science Title: Symmetric groups and Young tableaux Date: Tuesday, December 10, 2002 Place: Room 1621 Brazil Building of Science and Education Univ. of Haifa Time: 12:10 PM Abstract: A Young diagram (of order n) is an array of n cells arranged in k rows in such a way that the length of i-th row is not greater than the length of (i-1)-th row. In other words a Young diagram of order n is a visualization of a partition of n. Fill the cells of a Young diagram of order n with numbers 1,2,...,n in such a manner that numbers increase in rows from left to right and in columns from top to bottom. Such an array is called a Young tableau of order n. We discuss the algorithms connecting the symmetric group S_n with the set of all Young diagrams of order n and the set of all Young tableaux of order n. Further we show the important role of Young diagrams and tableaux in representation theory of S_n and discuss the information about elements of S_n that could be obtained from Young tableaux. ------------------------- For further information, or to be put on our mailing list, contact: David Blanc (tel. 8249758, room 1609, e-mail blanc@math.haifa.ac.il) or Kobi Peter (tel. 8240354, room 1610, e-mail kobi@math.haifa.ac.il) --------------------------------------------------------- TechnionMathNet2 TECHMATH2 Editor:Michael Cwikel Announcement from: David Blanc
