24.3.02 Dear Students: Good luck to those of you who have that examination today. As agreed, if you have any energy left, I will be available to continue our discussion of vector analysis at 19:30. Once again we will meet in room 814 of the Amado Building. I have a few items of simple food/drink to offer you as we go. If you expect to be hungry it might be wise to bring a few other things also. kol tuv, khag sameakh M.C. At this stage we have not scheduled any more meetings. ================================ THIS FILE CONTAINS EARLIER MESSAGES SENT TO PEOPLE ON THE "VECTOR ANALYSIS MAILING LIST". (The list is at the end of the file. write to me if you want to join or leave it.) ================================= 11 Mar. 2002 Dear Students: At the meeting on Wed. March 6 we discussed parametric representation of surfaces, and gave an intuitive development of the integrals for calculating (1) the area of a surface (2) the mass of a surface of variable surface density (mass per unit area) (3) the flux (="shetef") of fluid (volume of fluid per unit time) across a surface (from one side to the other). The most important of these integrals in vector analysis is (3) which appears in Stokes' theorem and the Gauss divergence theorem. We decided to meet again on Wednesday 13 March at 17:30. I plan to give some examples of calculating surface integrals and talk then about the Gauss, Green and Stokes theorems, at least in part. If anyone who was not at the meeting last week wants to come on the 13th I suggest contacting me or meeting at least briefly with me before then to get some shortened explanation of what we did last time and/or a reference to books/hovrot for this material. Assuming there are no unexpected problems, I also plan to be available on the other dates and times which we decided earlier. (March 20 and 24) If people come on those days I will decide the material to be taught as a function of who is there, i.e. if people come who were not present on March 6 and 13 I may treat the topic of surface integrals again, either completely or in a shortened form. If not I will go further with the Gauss, Stokes (and Green) theorems and some of their applications. kol tuv M. C. ================================== 28 Feb. 2002 Dear Vector analysis people: Here are the times which seem reasonable for future meetings: Wed. March 6, starting 18:30. THIS WILL BE IN THE AMADO BUILDING. ROOM 814 LIKE LAST TIME. Wed. March 20, starting 16:30. Wed. March 24, starting 18:30. I plan to come on those days and I will simply see who turns up. I will bring some sort of "fuel" to help keep you and me going, I cannot definitely promise that I will be organized quite like last time. I invite you also to bring something. If you are interested in more details of the voting, see below. Kol tuv Michael C. ====================== On the basis of the voting of 8 of you, (yes only 8) the next time that we can all meet is Wednesday March 6, starting at 18:30. I will be available then (if I am not sick again, but I am usually well) On the basis of the very first round of voting, we had originally planned to have a meeting on Wednesday March 20, starting at 16:30. But one of the 8 people who voted now marked that whole day with "N". The next previously scheduled meeting was supposed to be on Sunday March 24 starting 18:30. But now one of you has discovered that you cannot come any earlier than 20:30. !! We had also decided on Sunday 31 March starting 18:30. But this is Khol hamoed. For this and all other days, from now till April 12, at least one person of the eight who voted has marked "N". Since only one person objected to the previously chosen times on March 20 and 24, I plan to keep those times as originally planned. That person can hopefully get notes from a friend for those times. ===================== ==================================== EARLIER MESSAGE: Shalom Rav! 6.2.02 22:40 I have just sent out the "voting form" to see if we have a better time to meet than the time we already found. Here are the people I sent it to. Write to me if you want to join or leave this list. kol tuv M.C.
