October 2004
INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS OF INFI 3.
Bhatzlakha!!
There will be a mid term test lasting 60-90 minutes, and a final
examination.
The final examination will be in two parts each lasting 90 minutes, with
a break between them.
During the mid term test, and during each part of the final examination,
students will not be permitted to leave the room. For more details
about this please click
here.
There will be several sets of homework exercises. Some of these (maybe
about half of them) will be in the framework of "MathNet", i.e. you will
log in to a website which issues the questions and you will type your
solutions directly on the computer. For more details about this please
see
here.
The remaining sets of exercises will be published on my website and
you can submit your solutions on paper for correction.
Each set of exercises (whether "MathNet" or "paper") will have to be
submitted before a certain date which will be announced when the set is
published. Please submit and collect your paper homework by using the
designated boxes on the ground floor of the Amado Building. Please submit
using box 288 and collect from box 38. Also, pay attention to what is
written on the boxes. The collection box will be open all the time.
CALCULATING YOUR GRADE
Your scores in the final examination and in the "MathNet" exercises
will be "takeff".
Your scores for the mid term test will be "magen".
The final examination will have a weight of 95% and your solutions to
the "MathNet" exercises will be worth 5%.
Initially your final grade will be the total of these two scores, i.e.
out of 100%. But it may be raised by your "magen" components.
The "magen" weight of the mid term test will be 30%.
There will also be a "paper homework" magen whose weight will be
either 5% or 10%. Here are the details about that:
This magen will NOT be determined by the homework pages that you
submit for us to check. Our checking has only ONE goal, to give you at
least partial feedback about whether you are solving the problems
correctly. Please take advantage of this service. On the other hand
please do not waste your time and our time by giving us your copies of
other students' homework solutions!! That will not help you at all.
(Depending on available manpower, it may happen that we will only be
able to check a part of the exercises that you submit.)
In the mid term test and also in the final examination there will be
at least one question taken from the "paper" homework exercises, possibly
with some small changes.
Your score in each of these question will give you a magen of 5%. So
if you answer both these questions well, i.e. better than your overall
performance on the final examination, your homework magen will be 10%
You are permitted, if you wish, to do both examinations, Moed Alef,
and Moed Bet. You will benefit from your mid term and paper homework
"tsiyunei magen" for BOTH of these examinations. But if you do both
examinations PLEASE understand that your final grade at the end of the
semester will be your result for Moed BET (even if you did better in
Moed Alef).
MILUIMNIKIM
If you have miluim, first of all, shmor al atzmeykhem! (v'gum al
kulanu!).
If you need us to do something special because you had miluim (see
below) I will need to see the ORIGINAL of your certificate ("tlush")
that you had miluim. Please be sure to show it to me BEFORE you give
it to Bituach Leumi. Sorry, but I will NOT accept a photocopy. (If you
forget to do this there is another solution. There is an army internet
site where you can order a new certificate confirming that you had
miluim on certain dates. I understand that it takes about 2 weeks for
you to get such a certificate by mail.) To avoid any misunderstanding
or mistakes, when you show your "tlush" to me, I will immediately send
an email message to you (and myself) confirming and recording the
dates of your miluim.
Please feel very free to contact me for explanations about material
you have missed. I will give you extra classes/tirgulim if you wish.
(And of course I am willing to answer questions from all students,
regardless of miluim.)
I plan to give a special "moed miluimnikim" exam for students who had
miluimim on the date of moed alef or moed bet.
I will also offer students who had miluim on the date of the mid term
test the option of answering a designated subset of the questions,
from the "moed miluimnikim" exam during a shorter time period, to get
a mark to be used as their mid term score. But to be allowed to do
this you must tell me two weeks before the examination that you need
this repeat mid term.
LEARNING DIFFICULTIES (Ha'arakhat Zman)
Both the mid term test and the final examination will be organized to
allow the usual amount of extra time to students who have learning
difficulties. This may perhaps mean that these students in the final
examination may have to arrive and begin writing 15 minutes before
other students. (Details will be announced later.)
To be given this extra time because of learning difficulties you MUST
have the usual appropriate document authorizing this from Dekan
Limudey Hasmakha. We will need to see the original version of it on
the day of the test/exam. In very exceptional cases I may perhaps also
allow extra time to a VERY RECENT new immigrant whose Hebrew is still
very very limited. For that you must speak to me in advance, at least
one week before the test/exam.
