March 2003 - Kheshbon Infi 2 ("Infinitesimal Calculus 2") 104281 (Updated 12/5/03) INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS ========================= First, Bhatzlakha!! I apologize in advance that parts of the following document may seem harsh and unfriendly. This is because I have to state things precisely, to be completely certain that you understand exactly what are the requirements of this course. We need a fair and consistent way of giving a truthful report of what each of you has learned, and taking account of problems of students during the semester. There is no perfect way of doing this, but we try to optimize. HOW WILL YOUR GRADE/MARK/TSIYUN IN "INFI 2" (104281) BE DETERMINED? (Americans say "grade", British people and Australians say "mark".) On ((Friday, 23 May)) NOW CHANGED TO ANOTHER AS YET UNDECIDED DATE MARCH 29? MARCH 28?, 2003 there will be a mid term test (="bachan") (90 minutes) which will determine 30% of your final mark ("tsiyun MAGEN"). There will also be a mark for homework exercises which you submit which will determine 10% of your final mark (again this is "tsiyun MAGEN"). To benefit fully from the "magen" for homework you will have to answer a question very similar to a homework question both in the bachan and also the examination. (See below for more details.) The remaining 60% (or more) will be determined by the final examination. It will have two parts, each lasting 90 minutes, with a 20 or 30 minute break between them. Suggestion: If you really want to do well in this course, imagine that the homework grade is "TAKEFF"! SOME ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT DETAILS ABOUT THE BACHAN & EXAMINATION During each 90 minute session NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE EXAMINATION ROOM. (If you have some special problem, e.g. a medical problem, which means that you may perhaps be unable to stay in the room for 90 minutes, then you should tell me about it, and provide appropriate documentation, at least SEVEN DAYS before the date of the bachan or exam, so we can attempt to find some special solution for you.) The bachan and exam. will be WITHOUT "khomer ezer". This means also WITHOUT calculators. You are permitted, if you wish, to do both examinations, Moed Alef, and Moed Bet. You will benefit from your "magen" from the mid term test and homework for BOTH of these examinations. But if you do both examinations PLEASE understand that your final grade at the end of the semester will be your result for Moed BET (even if you did better in Moed Alef). HOMEWORK EXERCISES There will be several sets of homework exercises. To get a tsiyun magen for them you have to submit them for correction by the date announced. If you have some exceptional problems we may agree in some cases to accept late submissions, but please do not count on this without speaking to us first. In both the bakhan and the final examinations there will be at least one question taken from the homework exercises, probably with some small modifications. Everyone who has done and understood the homework exercises should be able to solve this question without difficulty. So these questions should help you improve your mark for the bakhan and the exam(s). But there is a second reason for having these special questions: You will surely agree that it is unfair to serious hardworking students to give the same homework magen to another student who simply copies someone else's solution. Therefore, in order to fully benefit from the "magen" for homework you must answer these questions successfully. In fact the total number of points for the bakhan and the examinations will possibly be more than 100% because there may peryhaps be some extra "bonus" question(s) on the examination. Thus at least some of you may obtain a final mark greater than 100%. I have to apologize in advance that in such cases I will not be able to officially give you more than 100%. But, if you need it, I may be able to write you some sort of letter of reference saying something about your achievement. MILUIMNIKIM If you have miluim, first of all, shmor al atzmeykhem! (v'gum al kulanu!). If you need us to do something special because you had miluim (see below) we will need to see the ORIGINAL of your certificate ("tlush") that you had miluim. Please be sure to show it to me BEFORE you give it to Bituach Leumi. Sorry, but we will NOT accept a photocopy. (If you forget to do this there is another solution. There is an army internet site where you can order a new certificate confirming that you had miluim on certain dates. I am told that it takes about 2 weeks for you to get such a certificate by mail.) To avoid any misunderstanding or mistakes, when you show your "tlush" to me, I will immediately send an email message to you (and myself) confirming and recording the dates of your miluim. Please feel very free to contact me for explanations about material you have missed. I will give you extra classes/tirgulim if you wish. (And of course I am willing to answer questions from all students, regardless of miluim.) I plan to give a special "moed miluimnikim" for students who had miluimim on the date of moed alef or moed bet. I will also offer students who had miluim on the date of the mid term test the option of answering a designated subset of the questions, during a shorter time period, to get a mark to be used as their mid term score. But to be allowed to do this you must tell me two weeks before the examination that you need this repeat mid term. In principle, no other students will be accepted to this "moed". In the past, a small number of students with some very very special other problems have sometimes been permitted to take part in this "moed", after explicit recommendations from the "Yechida l'Kidum Studentim". I wish no one to have such serious problems. But now "Kidum Studentim" no longer deals with this matter. Much as I sympathize with those who have problems, I will almost certainly have to say no to other people requesting such an additional "moed". LEARNING DIFFICULTIES (Ha'arakhat Zman) Both the mid term test and the final examination will be organized to allow the usual amount of extra time (25%) to students who have learning difficulties. To be given this extra time because of learning difficulties you MUST have the usual appropriate document authorizing this from Dekan Limudey Hasmakha. We will need to see the original version of it on the day of the test/exam. In very exceptional cases I may perhaps also allow extra time to a VERY RECENT new immigrant whose Hebrew is still very very limited. For that you must speak to me in advance, at least one week before the test/exam. ================ again, Bhatzlakha!! ================
