INSTRUCTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC "VOTING" TO CHOOSE A TIME FOR A TIRGUL,EXAM, ETC. Please follow these instructions when you receive one of my special "electronic voting forms" in an email message. Please be sure to write your name, student number etc. if there are places where they are requested. Forms without this information will not be counted. Please choose the "subject:" of your reply to contain the same words appearing in the "subject:" of the message that you received containing the voting form. If you submit the form using the "reply" command, this should happen automatically. The form contains "data lines" which look more or less like this: THU 4 APR []*, []7:30, []8:30, []9:30, []10:30, []11:30, []12:30, []13:30, []14:30, []15:30, []16:30, []17:30, []18:30, []19:30, IN ALL SUCH DATA LINES, PLEASE WRITE THE LETTER n OR THE WORD no IN THE "BOX" NEXT TO EVERY DATE/STARTING-TIME WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU. PLEASE WRITE THE LETTER y OR THE WORD yes IN THE "BOX" NEXT TO EVERY DATE/STARTING-TIME WHICH IS GOOD OR VERY GOOD FOR YOU. P L E A S E do NOT write n or no "stum" for dates or times which are possible for you, but less convenient. This is very unfair to your fellow students, and may mean that I will not be able to find any time which is o.k. for everyone. The following option can save you some work here: IF YOU WRITE [y]* IN THE F I R S T "starred" BOX OF A LINE I WILL UNDERSTAND THAT E V E R Y TIME LISTED ON THAT DAY IS GOOD FOR YOU. IF YOU WRITE [n]* IN THE F I R S T "starred" BOX OF A LINE I WILL UNDERSTAND THAT E V E R Y TIME ON THAT DAY IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU. So then of course there is no need to write anything in the other boxes on that line. Anything which happens to be written in any of those other boxes will be automatically changed to whatever you wrote in that first "starred" box. IF YOU LEAVE A "BOX" EMPTY, THE COMPUTER AND I WILL UNDERSTAND THAT THIS DAY/TIME IS POSSIBLE FOR YOU, BUT NOT AS GOOD AS THE DAYS/TIMES WHICH YOU HAVE MARKED WITH "yes" or "y". DON'T WORRY ABOUT SPACES. THESE WILL ALL BE REMOVED AUTOMATICALLY. E.g. "[y]" or "[yes ]" or "[Y]" or "[ Y ]" are all the same thing for me. Don't worry if your editor splits a longer line into two shorter lines. We can cope with that too. Your editor should of course be in INSERT mode so that you do NOT overwrite the brackets when you transform [] into [y] or [n]. But please do NOT join separate lines into single lines. ================================================================= To be sure that your vote can be counted: 1. Please do NOT delete any "data lines" or lines between data lines. 2. Please do NOT write ANYTHING on lines between data lines. 3. Please do NOT write anything in the data lines except any of the following four "words". y yes n no 3. Please write these words ONLY in "boxes", i.e. between [ and ] . [y] [yes] [n] [no] THANKS! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= In case you should ever need to help a group of people choose a time/date which is most suitable for some activity, I mention that there is software for generating these voting forms and also of course for counting the votes. It is a little awkward to use, but it is freely available from me. It works under windows. But it can be easily modified to also work under unix.
