(October 2005)
INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS OF HEDVA 2M.
Bhatzlakha!!
There will be a mid term test lasting
90 minutes, and a final examination.
The final examination will be in
two parts each lasting 90 minutes, with a break between them.
During the
mid term test, and during each part of the final examination, students will not
be permitted to leave the room. For more details about this please click here.
STRUCTURE OF THE TEST AND EXAM. "AMERICAN" QUESTIONS AND "OPEN" QUESTIONS.
The following information applies to BOTH the midterm test and the
final examination.
There may perhaps be some "American" questions, (i.e. multiple
choice questions), but there
will DEFINITELY be "open" questions. In fact at least 50% of the
the test and at least 50% of the examination will consist of "open" questions.
There will be (at least) one question from "MathNet" class or homework
exercises in the midterm test and also one such question in the examination.
To get full marks for these questions you will have to show your calculations
and explain and justify the steps.
Getting good scores for these particular MathNet questions can also help
your "magen" as explained below.
HOMEWORK AND "MATHNET" EXERCISES
You will do exercises for this course using
"MathNet", i.e. you will log in
to a website which issues the questions and you will type your solutions
directly on the computer. For technical details about using MathNet
please see here.
Similarly to what you know from Hedva 1M,
there are three kinds of MathNet exercises.
1. Preparatory exercises (shiurey hakhana)
2. Class exercises (shiurey kita). (These are intended to be a
supplement to the tirgulim.)
3. Homework exercises (shiurey bayit)
Preparatory exercises (shiurey hakhana) are designed to be done
BEFORE the lectures. We warmly recommend doing them. And, if you do them
before the specified dates of the corresponding lectures, some bonus
points will be added to your final grade. (Details below).

MILUIMNIKIM
If you have miluim, first of all,
shimru al atzmeykhem! (v'gum al kulanu!).
If you need us to do
something special because you had miluim (see below) I will need to see
the ORIGINAL of your certificate ("ishur" NOT "tsav kria") that you had miluim.
Please be sure to show it to me BEFORE you give it to Bituach Leumi. Sorry, but
I will NOT accept a photocopy. (If you forget to do this there is
another solution. There is an army internet site where you can order a
new certificate confirming that you had miluim on certain dates. I
understand that it takes about 2 weeks for you to get such a certificate
by mail.) To avoid any misunderstanding or mistakes, when you show your
"ishur" to me, I will immediately send an email message to you and to
the metargelet akhrayit (and to
myself) confirming and recording the dates of your miluim.
Please
feel very free to contact me for explanations about material you have
missed. If there are some special difficulties I may perhaps be able to
give you extra classes/tirgulim. (And of course I will do my best to
answer questions from all students, regardless of miluim.)
I plan
to give a special "moed miluimnikim" exam for students who had miluimim
on the date of moed alef or moed bet.
I will also offer students who had miluim on the date of the mid
term test the option of answering a designated subset of the questions,
from one of the final exams during a shorter time period, to get a
mark to be used as their mid term score. But to be allowed to do this
you must tell me two weeks before the examination that you need this
repeat mid term.
LEARNING DIFFICULTIES (Ha'arakhat
Zman)
Both the mid term test and the final examination will
be organized to allow the usual amount of extra time to students who
have learning difficulties. This may perhaps mean that these students in
the final examination may have to arrive and begin writing 30 minutes
before other students. (Details will be announced later.)
To be
given this extra time because of learning difficulties you MUST have the
usual appropriate document authorizing this from Dekan Limudey Hasmakha.
We will need to see the original version of it on the day of the
test/exam.
LECTURES ON VIDEO
The Technion Audio-Visual
Library has recordings made several years ago of lectures and tutorials
for this course. This is excellent material and you may find them very
useful. However you should note that there have been some changes to the
syllabus since these recordings were made. So they do not cover some
topics which you will be expected to know. On the other hand they may
cover some other topics which you are now not expected to know.
KHOVERET OF LECTURE NOTES BY MICHAEL CWIKEL AND SHAHAR MENDELSON
Many years ago I wrote lecture notes (in Hebrew) for the course
"Matematika 2-Khet", which was quite similar to the course "Hedva 2M".
These notes consist of two hand written volumes ( "khovrot") and a third
volume of past examination questions and their solutions. They do NOT
cover some of the topics of Hedva 2M and they also deal with some topics
that you do not need to know for Hedva 2M. However a considerable number
of students and lecturers have found them to be useful for Hedva 2M.
You can find
these khovrot in various Technion libraries. Graphics files of the first
two khovrot will hopefully also be available soon from the internet
and/or from CDs in some Technion libraries.
Shahar Mendelson and I have begun writing a new version of these old lecture
notes.
Part of it has already been typed.
A very preliminary version of PART of this new document
is now available as a postscript
file.
WARNING: It has
NOT yet been carefully proof read. We know there are some misprints.
Please let me know if you see misprints.
IT IS BIG (ABOUT 2 MB) AND IS ABOUT 45 PAGES, WITH SOME 29
PICTURES.
You can get it here
.
Again we stress that those 45 pages of the postscript file
cover only PART of the course.
(If you are interested in a student
job to continue the work of typing these khovrot, see
here.)
HERE
ARE THE BOOKS LISTED FOR STUDY IN THIS COURSE.
